RENTING A CAR

Cars are available for rent at the airports both in Coro and in Punta Fijo. According to the Venezuelan consulate in New York, your tourist card, passport, and a valid driver's license from your native country are the only documents you need to legally drive. Car rental is expensive, ranging from $50.00 per day for a two-door standard without air conditioning to $100.00 per day for a Toyota Corolla to $125.00 per day for a Toyata Macho four-wheel-drive vehicle. Gas, however, is extremely cheap when compared to the rest of the world.

Beware that it is not uncommon for all parties involved in an accident to be jailed until all evidence is collected. Drive carefully and defensively at all times, and avoid driving at night. Be sure to store the vehicle in a locked or fenced area. It might be a good idea to rent a car only for a few days of exploring, if at all, and to otherwise make use of public transportation, which is not only very cheap, but is an excellent way to immerse yourself into the national culture. Note that Budget offices abroad can handle your reservations.
